"The
training our management team received was first-rate. Bruce kept the training
interesting while covering all the pertinent information, and then some. This
is by far the most useful training I've ever received."
Jennifer Ororke, HR Manager, Bay
Valley Foods Dixon Plant. Corporate
Employee Drug User Recognition
Join ACE Hardware,
John Deere and Company, Alcoa, K-Mart, W. W. Grainger, Caraustar, Illinois
Masonry, Bay Valley Foods, Clipper Wind Power Inc., and other corporations who have trained their supervisors and managers in recognizing drug impaired employees using the unique Talbot Method.
What Is The Talbot Method?
The Talbot Method is a unique two-step process of recognizing and documenting employee substance abuse impairment. Totally hands-off, The Talbot Method trains supervisors that all drugs of abuse, when taken at an intoxicating dose, effect the eyes and body systems in known, predictable ways. Recognizing these easy to spot drug effects allows a supervisor to start an intervention and thus maintain a safe and drug-free workplace. Bruce R. Talbot Associates has several expert trainers in the field of drug impairment recognition and prevention ready to come to your site to help.
But Isn't There Liability In Looking For Drug Impairment Symptoms?
As the courts have ruled on drug-free workplace suits over the years, one of the
most frequent corporate short comings has been failure to train supervisors and
managers. An employee discharged for failure to submit to a fitness for
duty examination claims the company supervisor did not have reasonable grounds
to make the fitness for duty request because there was no drug-impairment
symptom recognition training given to the supervisor.
The real liability is in ignoring drug impaired employees and thus creating an unsafe workplace. When an employee is injured, the company can be held liable if it can be shown the injury was due to drug impairment and the company failed to take reasonable steps to recognize and remove the drug impaired employee. Training company supervisors and managers is liability protection!
Can My Company Afford This Training Program?
The real question is can you continue to afford NOT train your supervisors and managers to recognize drug impaired employees? Unfortunately drug impairment effects EVERY company in America, no one sector of the economy is immune. For example, between July 1999 and December 2002, 143 workers at Three Mile Island and Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station tested positive for drugs, according to a newspaper investigative report!
Do a cost/benefit analysis for your company:
-
It is conservatively estimated by the federal government that 7.8% of the full-time American workforce are drug impaired and these employees cost a company twenty-five percent of their yearly salary in abuse of sick time,
(40 days per year vs. 4 1/2 days for a non-drug using employee) increased accidents and injuries (85% higher for drug users), in addition to lost productivity through drug-induced mistakes. -
Take 7.8% of your company employees times twenty-five percent of the average wage and now you see the hidden cost ignoring drugs in the workplace is costing your company. -
A company with
1,500 employees would expect to have 117 drug using employees. If an
average wage was $15.15 per hour, a twenty-five percent salary loss due to
drug use would equate to a company-wide drug-loss of over $900,000.
Former General Motors Chairman Rodger Smith stated employee drug use cost GM over one billion dollars!
"You
really captivated the participants with your knowledge. Quite a few of the guys
announced that you were their favorite consultant! We are looking
forward to working with you again"
Jeanne Mueller, Training &
Development, Clipper Wind Power Inc.
